Inside Will Smith’s $42 Million Calabasas Mansion
Using copper mesh, hand-hammered bronze, and carnelian cabochons, designer Lance erected a serpent-themed fireplace screen. Together with a formal dining room that featured foliate sconces fashioned of twisted brass wire by artist Mary Brogger, there was also a segregated sitting area. The Smiths were able to create an old cultured appearance with their collection of antique carved doors and panels. They have incorporated architectural elements from the American Southwest, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. One such element is the house’s imposing front door, which resembles the entrance to a fort in northern India. Jada said that she has a thing for doors and has always seen them as a kind of entryway to something else.
The bed canopy in the master bedroom of the home was the designer’s coup de theater. It was made up of little ball chains that were hung from the ceiling by bronze links. The main home of the expansive adobe-style property has nine bedrooms, a movie theater, and a private recording studio. The couple’s desire for an earthy, organic house has always been a spiritual pursuit. The goal of the house’s design was to provide a family hideaway, and every effort was made to make it seem as natural as possible using handcrafted materials.
