Bailey Zappe, the backup quarterback for the New England Patriots, received some more repetitions at practice this week since starting quarterback Mac Jones may have had the worst game of his career last Sunday. However, no change at the position “is considered likely or imminent” at this time, according a report by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
In a blowout defeat to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4, Jones completed 12 of 21 passes for 150 yards while turning the ball over three times. He lost a fumble and picked up two interceptions, both of which were recovered for scores.
Zappe didn’t turn the ball over despite only finishing 4-for-9 for 57 yards after entering the game in the late third quarter. Still, New England lost 38-3 towards the conclusion of the game.
Following the game, Jones received widespread support from the Patriots. Although head coach Bill Belichick said that there will be no changes at the position going forward, he did not rule out Zappe’s workload growing, which it seems has already occurred.
Belichick said, “I doubt anything would change significantly.” However, we will discuss that. I’m not sure. That stage hasn’t been reached yet.
After the game last week, offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien had nothing but positive things to say about Zappe.
Bailey puts in a lot of effort, he added. “He has really improved. He has an excellent manner for the role. He’s made a lot of progress, and I felt he fared well the last time he entered the game. Even though the game was obviously not close at that point, he made several solid plays. And that’s absolutely something he wants to improve on. He is a really hard worker. A pleasure to coach.
On Sunday, the Patriots will play the New Orleans Saints. At Gillette Stadium, kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
