Most people agree that Bill Belichick is the best head coach in NFL history. That being said, he is not guaranteed a position with the Patriots. Owner Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots is reportedly frustrated with the team’s performance after Tom Brady left in 2020 and is considering firing the longstanding coach if things don’t get better quickly. This is according to The Athletic.
“There’s a school of thought that suggests Bill Belichick has earned the right to go out on his own accord, that the architect of the greatest dynasty in NFL history can coach in New England as long as he chooses,” Jeff Howe writes. “Kraft doesn’t subscribe to it.”
Belichick’s career accomplishments are undeniable. Few players have ever been able to equal his tenure atop the Patriots, which started in 2000, with six Super Bowl titles, an NFL record 31 career postseason victories, and 330 total wins. However, New England has only gone 25-25 since Brady, his future Hall of Fame quarterback, left for the Buccaneers in 2020, and hasn’t won a postseason game since 2018, when the team went to Super Bowl LIII against the Rams.
“Kraft likes to remind people he grew up as a Patriots fan during the organization’s darkest days,” writes Howe. But it doesn’t mean he’s got the endurance to put up with more of them. He has bemoaned the team’s lack of a postseason triumph in the post-Brady era on numerous occasions in recent years. Kraft’s lack of success has left him feeling irritated, if not outright furious.”The Patriots have struggled recently, going 1-4 and losing their previous two games by a combined score of 72-3. In their Week 6 matchup on Sunday against the Raiders, who are led by former Patriots assistant Josh McDaniels, they will attempt to bounce back.
