Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll remains open to the possibility of Fernando Alonso extending his contract with the team. Alonso joined Aston Martin earlier this year, recognizing the organization’s potential under Stroll’s leadership. The team has made significant strides this year with the opening of a new state-of-the-art factory and plans for a new wind tunnel in 2024.
Aston Martin experienced a remarkable development period, propelling the team from seventh place in the previous year’s constructors’ championship to having the second-best car on the grid behind Red Bull in the first half of the season. Alonso, a two-time F1 champion, achieved podium finishes in six of the first eight races, including second-place finishes in Monaco and Canada.
Stroll has rightly acknowledged Alonso’s performances this season, stating: “He’s brought a tremendous amount. He’s full of energy like he’s 22 years old.”
Speaking to Sky Sports, he added: “He’s very committed, extremely motivated, obviously hugely talented and a fantastic ambassador for the brand.
“He’s been fantastic as a Formula 1 driver, so I’d say, on and off the track, he’s been a fantastic ambassador for Aston Martin.”
Despite a drop in the team’s performance during the latter part of the season, Lawrence Stroll acknowledged Alonso’s significant contributions, describing him as full of energy and a fantastic ambassador for the brand. While Lawrence Stroll’s contract is set to expire at the end of the next season, there’s potential for him to sign a new two-year deal and continue racing until the age of 45.
“Anything is possible,” said Stroll. “Right now he has a contract to drive for us next year and we’re looking forward to that.”
Stroll, meanwhile, feels son Lance’s seemingly miserable season is down to nothing more than “a lot of bad luck”.
Regarding his son Lance Stroll’s performance, Lawrence Stroll attributed the challenging season to a series of unfortunate events rather than his son’s abilities. Lance faced injuries and multiple retirements due to engine failures and other issues. Despite a run of bad luck, Stroll Sr. commended Lance’s performance, particularly during the early races of the season, and believes his son has the potential to overcome these setbacks and improve in the future.
