Only recently did Tom Brady criticize the NFL for its “mediocrity” in restricting defensive plays with harsh penalties. According to him, the way the league is now structured makes it harder for quarterbacks to execute plays that will preserve their receiving corps. Brady’s old teammate Rob Gronkowski shares his sentiments, and the former even said in an incredibly candid way that quarterbacks don’t deserve to be named MVP this year.
Rob Gronkowski stated during a recent interview on “Up & Adams” that talented athletes, not quarterbacks, should be the front-runners for MVP this season. Six quarterbacks are presently considered MVP candidates, he continued, but he made it clear that none of them should be chosen.
Gronk believed that although quarterbacks could pass for over 400 yards in a game, other players were just not able to accomplish that feat. He also brought up Tom Brady, pointing out that the former teammate recently said that the present environment doesn’t support the “product” that players put on the field. Thus, whether a player is a running back or a cornerback, they should both be eligible for the MVP award.
This season’s MVP contender is Rob Gronkowski.
The former Patriots tight end selected 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey as his non-QB MVP favorite during their discussion of the current MVP race. He went on to say that the two-time Pro Bowler has been playing excellent football this year, scoring touchdown after score each week. He also brought up Myles Garrett, the defensive end for the Browns, who has been playing fantastically and ought to be considered for the MVP award.
The league has recently been under fire for restricting defensive plays. No longer do quarterbacks attempt to avoid passing into the middle of the field, as even Tom Brady was unable to do because of the possibility of hurting his teammates.
On the other hand, quarterbacks have consistently been given preference when choosing MVP. The last time RB Adrian Peterson took home the prestigious trophy was over ten years ago. Though those talented guys are up against quarterbacks like Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes, it’s possible that this year will be different.
