Former NFL quarterback Alex Smith disagrees with Tom Brady’s comments regarding football’s “mediocrity.”
The former quarterback, 39, respectfully differed with Brady, 46, whom he termed “the GOAT” on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown before assessing the league.
“He played in the most uncompetitive division in NFL history,” Smith, 39, said on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. “You get into the playoffs right out of training camp in the biggest cupcake division. Talk about mediocrity.”
Smith said that Brady “hasn’t been retired that long,” and that he won a Suρer Bowl despite the mediocrity.
Tom Brady Slams NFL ‘Mediocrity’: I don’t see the past excellence
After 16 seasons in the NFL, Smith said he loves the league’s progression.
“I know he’s talking about the rule over the middle over the field to the receiver,” Smith said of Brady. “But I think the game has improved.”
He added, “League parity has increased. League quarterback play is at an all-time high. The best athletes play the position. We didn’t have this 30-40 years ago. He also mentions lower оffensive figures. D-linemen are in their golden period, in my opinion.”
Brady expressed his concerns about the NFL’s “quality.” decline on The Stephen A. Smith Show last week.
“I think there’s a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL,” he remarked. “I don’t see the excellence that I saw in the past.”
He said, “Coaching isn’t as good. I don’t think young guys are developing as well.”
The seven-time Suρer Bowl champion blamed “the rules” for “allowed a lot of bad habits to get into the actual performance of the game,” speaking with Smith.
“I just think the product, in my opinion, is less than what it’s been,” stated Brady.
In retirement, the legendary quarterback still thinks about his time with Michigan and the Patriots, as shown by his Sunday Instagram post.
“I did Michigan and Massachusetts winters for a long time,” he commented, posting lovely photos from a snorkeling excursion with his kids. “Please give me this ️.”
