Dak Prescott will become very wealthy. The two-time Pro Bowler signed a four-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys before the 2021 NFL franchise tag deadline. The contract includes a record-setting signing bonus, $126 million in guarantees, a maximum of $164 million, and creative financial gymnastics that frees up cap space in North Texas. The signing is a win-win for both sides, and several Cowboys veterans have weighed in, repeating each other’s joy.
“They believe that Dak Prescott is their quarterback, and I do, too,” Roger Staubach told Doug Flutie’s SiriusXM “Flutie Flakescast” via Pro Football Talk.
Emmitt Smith, the Cowboys’ all-time top rusher, repeatedly warned against losing Prescott to another team.
“Congratulations to Dak and the Dallas Cowboys on the new deal,” stated the running back legend. “Now let’s focus on bringing things back together and winning more games!”
Staubach and Smith’s comments came a day after former Pro Bowl quarterback Danny White weighed in on Prescott’s contract worthiness.
“You know, I think Dak just has to be surrounded by the right people and then become the quarterback the Dallas Cowboys need that particular year, and they will win a Suρer Bowl,” White told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “Dak delivers on all counts. Dak’s strength is intangibles, which is wonderful. His locker room leadership, field performance, line-of-scrimmage play, and intelligence are all there.
“Everyone remembers Dak’s injuries from this year, but nobody remembers that he hadn’t missed a practice in his first four Cowboys seasons, which is extraordinary. We can’t control who gets contracts, breaks records, etc., but we hope it happens to a decent individual. It couldn’t have happened to a greater person than Dak.”
It seems clear that the Cowboys did the right thing by signing Prescott to a long-term contract after years of trying and failing, and that the club still has promise.
Tony Romo, Prescott’s predecessor, predicted in an exclusive CBS Sports interview in 2020 that the agreement would be completed, and Troy Aikman, the team’s former three-time Suρer Bowl winner, claimed earlier this year that he would. Aikman probably slept like a baby on March 8 after hearing the news, like Prescott, the other luminaries in Prescott’s corner, and the organization.
