Lewis Hamilton has firmly asserted that joining Red Bull was never on his agenda, brushing aside persistent rumors. He believes that securing victories with Mercedes is more beneficial for his legacy than doing so in what he considers the “most dominant car of all time.” Despite speculation and reported talks with Red Bull and Ferrari, the Englishman opted for continuity, signing a two-year extension with the Silver Arrows in August, quelling rumors of a potential move elsewhere.
The Daily Mail reports that Hamilton engaged in discussions with Red Bull and Ferrari before finalizing his contract with Mercedes, a claim initially denied by the driver. However, Red Bull principal Christian Horner swiftly countered Hamilton’s denial, confirming “several talks” with the seven-time world champion. Horner also revealed that Hamilton met with Ferrari’s chairman, John Elkann, in May during discussions with Red Bull.
Despite the intricate negotiations and speculations, the 38-year-old has committed to remaining with Mercedes until his 41st birthday. This decision holds significant weight, as it might have been Hamilton’s last opportunity for a lucrative move to another major constructor. The commitment underscores the strategic considerations and importance Hamilton places on the trajectory of his career and legacy in Formula 1.
“I think the signing has demonstrated my commitment to the team,” said Hamilton when asked about the reports of him exploring his options earlier this year.
“Let’s be real, every driver who races here dreams of being in a winning car, and I think when I was younger when maybe I hadn’t had much success in my McLaren days, it was much more attractive.
“If I think about it from a competitive point of view, when I moved to this team, I liked moving from a more successful team to one that hadn’t had it, with the vision of growing and building as a team, because when we did it was a better feeling.
“It wouldn’t be much for me to get into the most dominant car of all time – he concluded – working with my team to build and be able to beat them, it would be better for my legacy .”
