George Russell Aims for Memorable Farewell Season Alongside Departing Hamilton at Mercedes
In a significant development for the Formula 1 community, Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes after more than a decade was officially confirmed on Thursday. The seven-time world champion is set to join Ferrari for the 2025 season, marking the end of an era at the Brackley-based constructor. Hamilton, 39, will be teaming up with Frederic Vasseur, a key figure from his early Formula 1 journey in 2005.
Hamilton’s departure leaves his current teammate, George Russell, in search of a new partner for the upcoming season. The British duo finished third in their debut season together and secured the runner-up spot in the Constructors Standings in 2023, trailing behind Red Bull.
Expressing his sentiments on Instagram, Russell shared, “It’s been special racing alongside you, @lewishamilton. Let’s make this season one to remember.” The 25-year-old driver has proven his skills against the F1 legend and is eager to create lasting memories in their last season together.
Hamilton, in paying tribute to his 11-year journey with Mercedes, outlined his goals for the final year. “I have had an amazing 11 years with this team, and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together. The 25-year-old’s ambition seems to be shared with the veteran racer. While paying tribute to his time at Mercedes, Hamilton outlined his target for a final year.
“It’s a place where I have grown up, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. But the time is right for me to take this step and I’m excited to be taking on a new challenge.
“I will be forever grateful for the incredible support of my Mercedes family, especially Toto (Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal) for his friendship and leadership and I want to finish on a high together. I am 100 per cent committed to delivering the best performance I can this season and making my last year with the Silver Arrows, one to remember.”
