After being seen concealing her lips during a conversation with friends and colleagues Lana Del Rey and Jack Antonoff on Sunday at the 2024 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift seems to be more circumspect than ever.
At the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, the 34-year-old pop diva had a private talk with the Bleachers artist while covering her face with a black folding fan.
Taylor made the amusing gesture just before she accepted her 13th Grammy for best pop vocal album for Midnights. As a result, she said in her victory speech that her next album, The Tortured Poet’s Department, will be out in April.
The controversy from the Golden Globe Awards event in January, when Taylor was seen conversing with her longtime friend Selena Gomez, seems to be the inspiration for the decision.
Later, forensic lip readers revealed to DailyMail.com that the two singers were chatting about how Selena was worried about perhaps “upsetting” Kylie Jenner by asking her boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet, who used to be Selena’s costar, for a group photo.
Taylor, who was one of the evening’s best-dressed celebrities, wasn’t taking any risks this time around. Her followers quickly recognized the allusion and responded to the covert action with some amusing comments on social media.
Taylor, who has recently been the target of insane right-wing conspiracy claims, was spotted unwrapping a sophisticated black fan during the Grammy Awards broadcast.
She had brought it along, maybe to make fun of the earlier lip-reading mystery, but it might also have been an accessory to her gorgeous white Schiaparelli corset dress, which she paired with black gloves that hung down to reveal her upper arms.
Accompanying the Anti-Hero singer was her friend and sometimes duet partner Lana Del Rey, who also happened to be carrying a black fan.
During a break between award shows, the two singer-songwriters were seen chatting and holding up the fans in front of their faces.
In addition to her translucent black dress, Lana wore short sheer black gloves that matched her lacy black fans.
Taylor was sitting next to Jack Antonoff, her usual producer and co-songwriter, who wore a black tuxedo and large-framed spectacles instead of a tie.
He inclined closer to have a better understanding of the Folklore singer, while Taylor covered her lips with the fan to mask her words.
Taylor was grinning from ear to ear in the crowd, so it didn’t seem to have affected her happiness at all—even though she wasn’t leaving anything to chance.
Her close friend Selena Gomez was seen chatting with her at the January Golden Globe Awards, which sparked the prior awards event rumor controversy.
For DailyMail.com, forensic lipreader Jeremy Freeman has unearthed the trio’s chat exclusively. He said Selena, 31, was prevented from taking a picture with Timothée Chalamet, 28, because she was afraid of “upsetting” him and Kylie Jenner, 26.
Selena told Taylor and Keleigh, according to Freeman, “He didn’t want a picture with me, he said no,” to which Keleigh replied, “Timothée?”
After that, Taylor reportedly whispered in Selena’s ear, to which the actress from Only Murders in the Building responded, “I tried, I couldn’t, it’ll upset ’em.”
A Rainy Day in New York, directed by Woody Allen, featured Selena and Timothee as romantic leads back in 2018.
As soon as viewers started to examine the video, they assumed Selena was explaining how she had requested Kylie, the star of Wonka, for a picture, but Kylie had supposedly said no.
At the time, DailyMail.com reached out to Gomez and Jenner’s agents for comments.
Fans were eager to make fun of Taylor’s reticent appearance on social media after her most recent performance.
One user posted a picture of Anne Hathaway giggling uncontrollably and clutching a black fan, with the comment, “Taylor at the #grammys.”
Someone another advised ‘bringing a huge fan’ if one was going to ‘say s***’ in public.
If Taylor needed a fan to talk about her, then she was a “whole other level of famous,” one commenter remarked.
