Toto Wolff Optimistic as Hamilton and Russell Praise New W15 Design
Following the first day of pre-season testing in Bahrain, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has shared positive insights into the team’s outlook, revealing that both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are encouraged by the performance of the new W15 car.
The Silver Arrows, despite finishing second in the Constructors’ Championship in 2023, encountered frustration with inconsistent performances. However, the arrival of the W15 marks a significant overhaul in design philosophy, aimed at providing a more stable and competitive platform.
Wolff expressed optimism during the afternoon press conference, highlighting the team’s positive mood and emphasizing the importance of a stable foundation for development. He noted that initial feedback from the drivers has been promising, with both Hamilton and Russell indicating that the W15 is a platform they can effectively work with.
While Mercedes remains focused on their own progress, the dominance of Max Verstappen and Red Bull in testing poses a notable challenge. Verstappen’s consistent presence at the top of the leaderboard serves as a reminder of Red Bull’s formidable performance last season.
In the Mercedes camp, Russell’s testing program focused on data gathering, with little emphasis on glory runs. Hamilton, gearing up for his final season with Mercedes, aims to conclude the partnership on a high note by clinching an eighth Drivers’ Championship title before departing for Ferrari in 2025.
As the second day of pre-season testing approaches, Mercedes remains committed to refining the W15 and maximizing its potential. The team’s determination to regain competitive form sets the stage for an intriguing battle in the upcoming Formula 1 season.
