As the ‘War of the Rosés’ continues, Brad Pitt has taken back ownership of the French vineyard he shared with his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie.
The Chateau Miraval estate, known for its exceptional sparkling rosé, is the focal point of a protracted legal dispute between the two.
Pitt’s attorneys have said that Jolie sold her portion of the company to Russian entrepreneur Yuri Shefler with the intent of ‘pushing a stranger into [his] family home’ and purposefully robbing him of total ownership.
Now that a court in Luxembourg has taken away some of the shares that Mr. Shefler’s firm was initially given as a gift by Pitt to Ms. Jolie, he is once again in control.
Schefler, the president of the Stolichnaya vodka company, now has “virtually no say” in the multi-million-pound firm in Provence, according to a source close to the actor.
“Brad has fought his corner every step of the way,” the person said. Clearly, Shefler and Angelina misjudged him.
As 60-40 partners, Pitt and Ms. Jolie purchased the 1,300-acre Miraval estate in 2008, with Pitt holding the bulk of the shares.
He ‘gave’ Ms. Jolie’s firm Nouvel an additional 10% five years later in exchange for one euro, bringing them even.
However, the estate found itself at the center of a $350 million (£275 million) divorce dispute after their contentious breakup in 2016.
Jolie sold Nouvel to a consortium headed by Mr. Shefler in 2021. She “knew and intended Shefler and his affiliates would try to control the business,” according to Pitt’s attorneys.
Now, a court in Luxembourg, the home of Chateau Miraval’s parent business, has deprived Nouvel of the chunk of shares that Pitt gave him as a 2013 gift, giving the court-appointed receiver possession of those shares.
Pitt had said they were provided to her with the promise she wouldn’t sell them.
It was imperative, according to Judge Carole Kerschen, to break the “blockage of decision” in order to save the company. Within two years, a “merits hearing” will probably determine whether Pitt gets complete ownership of the shares that were donated to him.
