Ferrari President Optimistic as Lewis Hamilton Signs Historic Deal
In a stunning move that has rocked the Formula One world, Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, has inked a deal with Ferrari, signaling a seismic shift in the sport’s landscape. John Elkann, the president of Ferrari, expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to end Red Bull’s dominance with Hamilton’s arrival.
Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes after 12 seasons, where he secured six of his seven world titles, underscores his belief in Ferrari’s potential. The British racing icon had previously rebuffed rumors of a move to Maranello, but Ferrari’s persistent pursuit ultimately won him over.
‘I have always said over the years how much Lewis is a great driver, how much he has done for Formula One,’ the Ferrari boss told Sky Sports in Italy.
‘He will join Ferrari and this is a sign of how much he believes he can do great things with us.’
Elkann, a vocal admirer of Hamilton’s prowess both on and off the track, played a pivotal role in finalizing the deal, personally engaging with the renowned driver. Speaking to Sky Sports in Italy, Elkann emphasized Hamilton’s immense contribution to Formula One and expressed optimism about the partnership.
‘If we look at where we were a year ago, we started better,’ he said.
‘The important thing is to improve and progress. This is the dynamic that exists in Ferrari and it should be praised and supported.
‘There is a desire to ensure that we bring the Ferrari to do the best possible and this was palpable today. This, I mean, from everyone.’
The impending collaboration between Hamilton and Ferrari marks a significant chapter in Formula One history. Hamilton’s unparalleled success, boasting the most race wins and pole positions, coupled with Ferrari’s illustrious legacy, sets the stage for a compelling narrative in the seasons to come.
While Hamilton’s move signifies a bold new era for Ferrari, it also reflects the evolving dynamics within Formula One. With Red Bull’s recent dominance and Ferrari’s championship drought since 2007, the sport is poised for a potential power shift, especially with new regulations set to take effect in 2026.
‘By 2026 a cycle will close, then another will open,’ the Ferrari president said.
‘The important thing will be to always be competitive and continue to fuel this spirit.’
Despite facing setbacks, including Carlos Sainz’s absence due to appendicitis in the Saudi Grand Prix, Ferrari remains optimistic about their prospects. Young talent Oliver Bearman’s impressive debut, culminating in a seventh-place finish, garnered praise from Hamilton himself, highlighting the camaraderie and sportsmanship inherent in Formula One.
‘If one thinks he [Bearman] can stay ahead of Hamilton and Lando Norris on his debut, I think Oliver will remember this for his whole life,’ Elkann said.
‘The hug that Lewis wanted to give him shows what a great champion he is on and off the track.’
As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Ferrari and Hamilton as they embark on this unprecedented journey together, aiming to reclaim glory and redefine Formula One history.
