Ralf Schumacher Skeptical of Lewis Hamilton’s Impact at Ferrari
Ralf Schumacher has expressed skepticism regarding Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, questioning whether the seven-time world champion will significantly contribute to the team’s success. Hamilton is set to join Ferrari in 2025, partnering with Charles Leclerc in one of the sport’s most expensive deals.
Despite Hamilton’s ambition to secure an eighth Drivers’ Championship title, Schumacher doubts his ability to propel Ferrari to the forefront of Formula 1. Speaking to Formel1.de, Schumacher bluntly stated, “Hamilton will not be able to contribute much.”
Schumacher’s reservations extend to Hamilton’s potential impact on Ferrari’s quest to challenge Red Bull. While acknowledging Hamilton’s talent and accolades, Schumacher believes that the Brit lacks the consistent performance and sheer determination demonstrated by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Regarding Hamilton’s decision influenced by Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur, Schumacher acknowledges Vasseur’s commitment to supporting Hamilton but remains unconvinced of the outcome. Despite Vasseur’s efforts, Schumacher doubts whether Hamilton possesses the qualities to outshine his competitors, particularly Verstappen.
“I am sure Vasseur would not pay so much money for nothing,” added the German. “He will offer and give Hamilton everything to make sure he can perform. Hamilton is, of course, seven-time world champion and a fantastic driver.
“I don’t think he has the qualities that Verstappen has. I don’t think he is as consistent as Verstappen and he can’t take out that extra tenth at any cost.”
Schumacher’s sentiments echo those of former Renault boss Flavio Briatore, who also cast doubts on Hamilton’s motivation and emphasized Leclerc’s prowess. Briatore suggested that Hamilton may struggle against Leclerc, given the Monegasque driver’s familiarity with Ferrari’s dynamics over the past five years.
“If he was already driving at Ferrari today, he would do the same as Leclerc, who is a fast driver. The Monegasque is underrated. Hamilton will struggle to stay ahead of him. Drivers like Hamilton, when the car is not competitive, don’t put much effort into it.”
Furthermore, Briatore highlighted Ferrari’s need for substantial improvements to compete with Red Bull, asserting that neither Hamilton nor Leclerc can surpass Verstappen without a more competitive car.
“Ferrari may be the second team in the world championship, but it is not a position for Ferrari. They need to improve the car. With these gaps, no driver can make the difference.”
As Hamilton prepares for his new chapter at Ferrari, doubts linger regarding his ability to achieve further success and propel the team to championship glory. With skepticism from figures like Schumacher and Briatore, the pressure mounts for Hamilton to prove his worth in the demanding world of Formula 1.
