When Angelina Jolie dropped off her daughter Zahara Jolie-Pitt to Atlanta’s Spelman College on Wednesday, she was overcome with grief.
The 47-year-old Oscar winner assisted 17-year-old Zahara with her college transition in a video that Darryl Holloman, Spelman’s vice president for student affairs, shared on Instagram on Wednesday.
‘I’m going to start sobbing…’ said the Maleficent actress. I’m not sobbing yet,” she said, ‘keeping it together.’
Dr. Helene Gayle, the college president, joked that the events are meant to ‘purposefully to trigger’ emotions and ‘bring it all out,’ but she assured the Eternals actress that she will have ‘plenty of opportunity’ to be emotional at other collegiate ceremonies.
“I heard tomorrow night’s the big deal,” Jolie said, adding that she’s “holding it together still.”
‘How does it feel to be a Spelman mom?’ Hollman questioned Jolie. ‘I’m so thrilled; I’m so excited,’ she said.
Hollman shared two photos on social media: one of Jolie and Gayle posing together, and another of Jolie and Zahara taking a selfie with the comment, “Welcome to campus..Zahara, c’2026!!”
Jolie wrote, “Zahara with her Spelman sisters!” beside a group photo of Zahara and her college friends when she shared the photo in July.
Greetings to all of the new students enrolled for this academic year. An honor to have a family member as a new Spelman girl and a very unique location.
Six children are the product of Jolie’s marriage to her ex-husband Brad Pitt, 58: Maddox, 21, Pax, 18, Zahara, Shiloh, 16, and the twins, Vivienne and Knox, 14. Maddox is a student at Yonsei University in South Korea right now.
Prior to Zahara’s announcement that she will be attending Spelman, a historically Black college for women, Pitt expressed his pride in her to Vanity Fair earlier this month.
“How smart she is,” he said. “College is going to be even more beneficial for her.” She has a wonderful and exciting opportunity to follow her interests and choose her own path right now. I’m really happy.
“Where does the time go, right?” he continued. They mature too quickly. It makes me want to cry.
