During the Saturday Cannes Film Festival premiere of Emilia Perez, her new film, Selena Gomez broke down in tears.
After the musical crime drama directed by Jacques Audiard received an impressive nine-minute standing ovation, the 31-year-old performer wiped away tears.
Alongside Gomez were her co-stars Zoe Saldana and Edgar Ramirez, who hugged each other at the film’s finale. Gomez recently opened up about her social media break, according to Variety.
Later, Gomez posted images on her Instagram Story from the movie’s after-party celebration.
Sitting on an outside seat, the Disney Channel alum looked stunning in a long-sleeved dress of a dark green color.
The Only Murders in the Building actress wore a variety of jewelry items as part of her outfit, and her stunning brunette hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail.
In January 2023, it was made public that Gomez has agreed to star in Emilia Perez.
The main character of the film is a lawyer who is hired by a Mexican drug lord to assist him in having a sex change procedure to become a woman.
In the film, the singer of Love You Like A Love Song plays the gullible wife of the cartel head.
Leading the cast is Karla Sofia Gascon, and other actors like Adriana Paz and Mark Ivanir are also part of the cast.
The film’s production was originally scheduled to begin in 2022, but due to scheduling issues, filming was put on hold for several months.
In an interview with Variety earlier this year, Audiard disclosed that he had not originally planned Emilia Perez as a full-length motion picture.
The project’s director informed the media outlet that he had originally intended for it to be “an opera libretto in four acts,” but that he has now changed his mind.
It was the first time he had ever had an idea [for a film] in this form, he said.
The director continued by saying that he shot the majority of the film in studios because he felt that he had “more freedom for the parts that are sung and choreographed” when he was on set.
Choosing to film his piece in a studio, he said, seemed ‘like a return to a primal intuition.’
The current plan is for Emilia Perez to open in theaters in France on August 28.
