Hamilton Optimistic About Podium Prospects Amid Mercedes’ Upgrades
As Formula 1 gears up for the Canadian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has expressed optimism about Mercedes’ recent strides, suggesting that the team could soon challenge for podium finishes. After a difficult start to the season, the seven-time world champion believes the team’s ongoing improvements are closing the gap with leading rivals Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren.
Mercedes has yet to secure a podium in the first eight races of the season. George Russell’s fifth-place finishes in Bahrain and Monaco mark the team’s best results so far. However, the introduction of a new front wing in Monaco has given the Silver Arrows a much-needed boost.
Hamilton, who will debut the updated front wing on his car in Montreal after Russell’s initial trial in Monaco, is optimistic about the W15’s enhancements. “Yes, the car is continuing to improve,” Hamilton said. “Everyone is taking a step, hopefully closer to the Red Bulls, and that’s been really positive.”
Reflecting on the team’s collective effort, Hamilton added, “I’m incredibly proud of everyone back at the factory for their hard work and resilience. The focus and morale are high, and it’s great to see. I’m hoping that we can get close to these guys and start actually competing at the front.”
Hamilton, who has won the Canadian Grand Prix seven times in his illustrious career, remains hopeful for a strong performance this weekend. When asked about the possibility of a podium finish, he responded, “I don’t think it’s far away. We’ve got the upgrade, both cars have it this weekend, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it feels on track.”
Discussing where Mercedes has made the most significant progress with the W15, Hamilton pointed to improvements in ride quality and stability. “The biggest improvement this year has been ride quality and getting the car lower, which is what others have managed to do,” he explained. “Stability on entry into corners has also improved; the car is far more predictable and stable than it has been in the last couple of years. This year’s car allows for more committed corner entries.”
However, Hamilton acknowledged that Mercedes is still working on achieving better through-corner balance, an area where competitors have made notable advancements. “Through-corner balance is where we’ve been lacking, and where others have made significant steps, so that’s what we’re focusing on.”
As the Canadian Grand Prix approaches, all eyes will be on Hamilton and Mercedes to see if their recent upgrades can propel them back to the podium. With the team’s renewed confidence and ongoing development, the Silver Arrows are poised to make a stronger impact in the races to come.
