Two years after the death of his father, Henry Witherspoon, comedian Kevin Hart marked an important milestone in their relationship by purchasing his father’s first home. On the July 12 episode of his podcast “Gold Minds with Kevin Hart,” the “Jumanji” star told this touching story to guest Vince Staples.
Hart reflected on his mother, Nancy Hart, who worked tirelessly and with determination. As a single mother, she raised Kevin and his brother Robert while working as a computer analyst at the University of Pennsylvania. Nancy Hart taught her sons a strong work ethic and financial caution, always anticipating the unforeseen happenings of a rainy day.
He told the Compton rapper that he never had the opportunity to fully repay his mother, who died of ovarian cancer in 2007 before his career took off.
Despite the fact that his father was absent for much of his life, Hart is about to discover a crucial way to aid him.
The “Ride Along” box office star claimed that at this stage in his career, he wanted to bring some comfort into his father’s life. Hart asked his father to find him a house in Philadelphia, and he shocked him by finding one within hours.
“I remember asking my dad what he wants, and it’s like you’re kind of getting over because this is like when money started to come in,” Hart remarks. “I said, ‘Dad, I’m going to set you up.'” Let me get you a house. Simply choose a house in Philadelphia that you like, and I will get you. My father called me back approximately two hours later. He responds, ‘I got it.’ “I was like, ‘That fast?'”
The house his father chose cost $65,000, which was substantially less than Hart expected.

“It was about $65,000. I assumed I would have to spend some money. “I’ve never paid for a house faster in my life,” Hart remarked, emphasizing his father’s modest decision.
Hart continued to support his father over the years, making improvements to his living conditions to ensure his health.
He stated, “Years passed…” I was like, “Let me go and set you upright,” but the concept of comfort wasn’t as important as you might have thought.
“That’s where my mentality got a little grounded,” he explained.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the comic brought his father on holidays where he experienced the environment by trekking and zip-lining through the jungle, as well as having him visit his home where he could lounge by the pool and pose for family photos.
Hart had a rocky relationship with his father. He’s discussed it in his stand-up routines, his 2017 memoir “I Can’t Make This Up,” and countless interviews. Witherspoon was absent for much of Hart’s childhood owing to drug addiction problems.
Hart and his brother eventually persuaded their father to seek treatment, where he transformed his life and met his new spouse. This transformation enabled them to reestablish their relationship before his death.
This journey underscores Hart’s view of success and comfort, emphasizing that true wealth is more than just money; it is about eliminating worry from one’s life.
“The money is all perception-based,” Hart stated during his discussion with Staples. “If you actually want to function and understand how remarkable what you’ve accomplished is, analyze it in light of your environment and where you’ve come from. If you can look after yourself while concurrently pursuing your career or passion, you’ve already won.”
