Two years after his father, Henry Witherspoon, died, Kevin Hart reminisced on a watershed moment in their relationship: purchasing his father’s first home. On the July 12 episode of his podcast, “Gold Minds with Kevin Hart,” he told a touching anecdote with guest Vince Staples.
Hart also honored his mother, Nancy Hart, who worked tirelessly as a single mother to raise him and his brother Robert. She was a computer analyst at the University of Pennsylvania, and she taught in her kids the principles of hard work and financial responsibility, as well as the importance of planning for difficult times
He informed Vince Staples that he never had the opportunity to properly repay his mother before her death from ovarian cancer in 2007, which occurred before his career really took off.
Although his father was not around for much of his youth, Hart discovered a crucial way to help later in life.
The “Ride Along” star revealed that at this stage in his career, he wanted to bring comfort to his father. He urged his father to look for a house in Philadelphia, and to his astonishment, he found one within a few hours.
“I remember asking my dad what he wanted, and it was kind of like getting over because money had started to come in,” Hart said me. “I said, ‘Dad, I’m going to set you up.'” Allow me to get you a house. Just choose a place you like in Philadelphia, and I will take care of it. My father called me back two hours later, saying, ‘I found it.’ I was like, ‘That quick?’ ”

The house his father chose was priced at $65,000, which was significantly less than Hart anticipated to pay.
“It was about $65,000. I assumed I would be spending more. “I’ve never bought a house faster in my life,” Hart said, emphasizing how humble his father’s decision was.
Over the years, Hart continued to provide for his father, ensuring that he lived well.
He continued: “Years went by, and I thought, ‘Let me really set him up,’ but his idea of comfort wasn’t as grand as you’d think.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Hart would take his father on holidays where they would go hiking and zip lining, as well as spend time together at Hart’s home by the pool, creating family memories.
Hart had a complicated relationship with his father. He’s discussed it in his stand-up shows, his 2017 memoir “I Can’t Make This Up,” and in interviews. Witherspoon struggled with drug addiction and was absent for most of Hart’s upbringing.
Eventually, Hart and his brother assisted their father in seeking treatment, which transformed his life. This transformation allowed them to rekindle their relationship before Witherspoon died.
This encounter altered Hart’s perception of success and comfort, showing him that true riches is more than just money—it is about eliminating anxiety from one’s life.
“Money is all about perspective,” Hart explained during his interview with Staples. “If you really want to appreciate your accomplishments, consider where you started. You’ve already won if you can look after yourself and follow your dreams.”
